Insoluble Sulfur: Things You Didn’t Knew Before

Insoluble sulfur is one of the major components used in rubber manufacturing. It is commonly known as the best rubber vulcanizing agent. It helps in avoiding blooming that is otherwise present inside and on the surface of rubber material. Using common soluble sulphur will cause the bloom in rubber that can ruin the surface design of the rubber product. 

In some cases blooming can affect the physical characteristics of rubber as well. That's why it is necessary to take care of it before it can cause damage. 


Using insoluble sulfur is one of the most popular ways to avoid rubber blooming. However, insoluble sulfur is an unstable chemical that reverts back to rhombic sulfur whenever given the chance. To minimize this unwanted chemical change, insoluble sulfur manufacturers decided to add other highgrade insoluble sulfur that can be stored more easily. Crystex HD Ot 20 is one of them. 

If you are dealing with insoluble sulfur, remember that the reversion of insoluble sulfur into rhombic sulfur occurs slowly at room temperature but the process is way faster at higher temperature. Which means if the rubber is treated at higher temperatures before vulcanization the insoluble sulfur won’t be of any use as most of it will already be converted into the rhombic sulfur.
