What Are Sulfur Based Polymers?

 When it comes to sulfur and its polymers, sulfur-based polymers are quite unique. THeir renewable characteristics are getting increasing attention in the market. The utilization of elemental sulfur using the number of monomers during their preparation in the lack of solvents using the inverse vulcanization technique is offering the sulfur and its polymers with green and unique characteristics. 

To evaluate the properties of sulfur based polymers a number of characterization techniques have been used. Although the lack of solubility and the complex structure of sulfur-based polymers weakens the application of some standard characterization techniques.



Use Of Sulfur-Based Polymers In Rubber Industry

To convert the natural rubber and other polydiene elastomers into cross-linked polymers, a chemical process called vulcanization is used. In the rubber industry Rubber is the most common vulcanization agent. But the process of vulcanization of rubber using sulfur-based polymers is slow and non-economical. Vulcanization requires elevated temperature (140°C or more) and takes several hours, this long exposure to heat and oxygen leads to oxidative degradation of rubber, which results in poor mechanical properties of rubber. To speed-up the process of vulcanization, accelerators are used.
