Sulfur Blooming in Rubber

Blooming is the movement of some of the major compounding additives on the rubber surface when their concentration exceeds their solubility limit in the same rubber matrix.

Main causes of Blooming in rubber are: Excess dosage of Sulphur, heat, prolonged storage.

How to Resolve blooming issue in rubber?

Since Sulfur or RMS is a monomer, it tends to bloom (come out of rubber compound) when it is stored for a longer duration of time.

To prevent blooming , Insoluble sulfur is used in Rubber. Being a homopolymer, it is a long chain compound, hence it doesn’t come out of a rubber compound when stored over a longer period of time (Say up to 15 days). Blooming problem can be resolved using Insoluble sulfur over RMS or normal sulfur.
